Meta announces free WhatsApp access for competing ai chatbots in major shift
The move comes as discussions continue with European Union regulators over ongoing competition concerns related to the company’s AI and messaging policies.
Under the updated plan, Meta WhatsApp AI services will now temporarily allow competing AI chatbots free access to the WhatsApp Business API for one month.
This decision is part of Meta’s effort to address regulatory pressure and reduce the risk of potential penalties from the EU.
Earlier, the company had restricted WhatsApp use to its own AI assistant before later adjusting its policy to allow rivals, but with fees attached.
These changes triggered further scrutiny under Meta EU antitrust rules, leading to additional concerns from European regulators.
To ease the situation, Meta has now offered free access to the WhatsApp Business API for rival AI services operating in the European Economic Area.
The company said this step is intended to support ongoing talks with the European Commission and help reach a quick resolution.

A Meta spokesperson explained that the move gives both sides time to work toward a fair and balanced outcome.
Regulators have welcomed the decision but stressed that progress depends on Meta’s willingness to fully address competition concerns linked to Meta WhatsApp AI practices.
The European Commission is still reviewing whether the changes are enough to resolve issues under Meta EU antitrust rules.
If no agreement is reached, Meta could face fines of up to 10% of its global annual revenue.
