‘Is Ambani the real boss of India?’ Elon Musk questions Starlink delays
Elon Musk has sparked a new debate by questioning billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s influence in India amid delays to Starlink’s commercial launch. The SpaceX founder made the remark on X on October 8, after the Indian government rejected his claims about barriers to entering the country’s market.
Musk had earlier accused unnamed “oligarchs” of trying to protect their control over India’s telecom sector. He argued that Starlink could provide affordable, high-speed internet to millions of people, especially those living in remote and underserved areas.
Indian government rejects allegations
India’s Ministry of Communications rejected Musk’s allegations and said the approval process for satellite communication services was fair and non-discriminatory. The government said Starlink and other licensed satellite operators were at broadly similar stages of the regulatory process.
Officials also said all operators must complete required security checks before receiving spectrum for their services. The government maintains that the same rules apply to every company seeking approval.
Starlink faces competition in India
The dispute has drawn attention to growing competition between Starlink, Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel in India’s satellite internet market. All three companies have interests in the country’s expanding broadband sector.
Starlink has previously entered into distribution partnerships with both Jio and Airtel. At the same time, the two Indian companies have been pursuing their own plans for satellite internet services.
Questions remain over Starlink launch
Musk’s latest remarks have brought Ambani directly into the debate over Starlink’s entry into India. The disagreement has raised questions about market competition, regulatory approvals and the future of satellite internet in the country.
However, the allegations that powerful business interests are deliberately blocking Starlink have not been proven. Starlink is still waiting for the remaining approvals required to begin commercial operations in India.
The dispute highlights the challenges facing Starlink as it tries to enter India’s large internet market. The company’s launch depends on completing the required approvals, while the government says its rules apply equally to all operators.
The controversy also shows how competition between major technology and telecom companies can become a public issue. Whether Starlink can launch soon will depend on the remaining regulatory steps.
