A user from Pakistan urged Musk to initiate Starlink services in Pakistan in a tweet. The tweet appealed Tesla’s owner to introduce the services to connect millions to high-speed internet to unlock new economic opportunities. Her tweet went viral on social media, sparking debate on the possible impacts of Starlink in the country.
Musk responded directly, saying, “We are waiting for approval from the government.” His brief yet significant response points out regulatory barriers
It merits mention that on December 5, 2024, Minister of State for IT and Telecom Shaza Fatima Khawaja told the Senate Standing Committee on IT and Telecom that government was making efforts to bring Starlink to Pakistan. However, she acknowledged that regulatory approvals were yet to be finalised.
During Senate Standing Committee meeting, participants voiced concerns over bureaucratic hurdles. As the Ministry of IT and Telecom is actively assessing Starlink’s entry, the officials have underscored the significance of addressing security and compliance issues before approval.
