PTA warns 8.1 million mobile users of SIM blockage over CNIC renewal
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued an important warning for mobile users across the country. The authority has asked people to make sure their SIMs are linked with valid CNICs.
PTA said SIMs connected to expired or cancelled CNICs may be blocked at any time. This can suddenly stop mobile services and create serious difficulties in daily communication.
The authority also highlighted another serious issue involving SIMs registered in the names of deceased persons. Officials warned that such connections may be blocked and could also lead to legal complications.
Users have been advised to update their CNICs as soon as possible. Early renewal can help people avoid service disruption and unnecessary legal problems.
Why CNIC renewal has become important
The warning comes as millions of identity cards have already expired in the country. Authorities say many citizens ignore expiry dates until they face sudden problems.
The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has also urged people to renew identity cards before expiry. It said delays can affect routine activities and create avoidable inconvenience.
How expired CNICs can affect daily life
Officials said an expired CNIC does not only affect mobile phone services. It can also create issues in banking matters and access to government and welfare programmes.
People with expired documents may face interruptions in important services without prior notice. This is why authorities are repeatedly asking citizens to update their records.
No fines yet, but future penalties possible
Officials said no fines are currently being charged for late renewal. However, they warned that penalties may be introduced in the future.
That means people who delay renewal now could face additional complications later. Early renewal remains the safest option.
NADRA sending SMS alerts
According to official data, millions of identity cards have already expired nationwide. NADRA is sending SMS alerts to remind citizens to renew their documents in time.
These reminders are aimed at helping people avoid sudden suspension of services. Authorities believe timely awareness can reduce public inconvenience.
More than 8,100,000 SIMs linked to expired CNICs
NADRA revealed that more than 8,100,000 SIMs are currently linked to expired CNICs. These connections may require urgent renewal to remain active.
Officials said users should not wait until services are blocked. Updating documents early can prevent communication problems.
SIMs in the name of deceased persons
Authorities said SIMs registered in the names of deceased persons can be blocked at any moment. Citizens have been advised to transfer such SIMs to their own names immediately.
This step can protect users from sudden disconnection and possible legal questions. Proper ownership records are becoming increasingly important.
CNIC becomes necessary at age 18
Authorities said every citizen must obtain a CNIC after turning 18. PTA also requires a valid CNIC for continued active mobile services.
Without valid identity details, users may face restrictions in keeping their mobile numbers active. Officials say compliance is necessary for uninterrupted connectivity.
What mobile users should do now
Citizens should check whether their CNIC has expired. If the document is no longer valid, they should begin the renewal process without delay.
People should also confirm that all mobile numbers are registered under their own names. This simple step can prevent unexpected service suspension.
