Pakistan to approve in-flight internet service for passengers

LAHORE (Web Desk): Pakistan is moving toward allowing internet and mobile services on airplanes after the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) prepared a draft license for in-flight telecom satellite services.

The plan suggests that passengers may soon be able to use connectivity during flights under a regulated system. The draft is currently open for consultation, and stakeholders have been invited to share feedback by May 31.

Under the proposal, Pakistan in-flight internet services will only be allowed once an aircraft reaches a minimum altitude of 3,000 meters. This rule is designed to ensure safe and interference-free communication during flights.

The PTA has stated that companies will need to obtain proper certification before launching any service. Once approved, operators must begin services within 12 months of receiving the license.

The idea behind PTA telecom license is to allow private operators to provide internet and mobile connectivity on aircraft while maintaining strict regulatory control. The license will be valid for 10 years and can be renewed afterward.

According to the draft, operators will also be required to store and process data within Pakistan. This condition has been added to ensure data security and national oversight.

In addition, international bandwidth must be acquired through licensed local LDI operators. Satellite operators will also need to register with relevant authorities before offering services.

The proposal includes strong privacy and security rules for passengers. Any use of telecom equipment without approval will be strictly banned. Service quality must also meet international standards.

If implemented, Pakistan in-flight internet could significantly improve passenger experience, allowing travelers to stay connected during flights for work, communication, or entertainment.

The system is also expected to support airplane mobile service Pakistan, which would enable mobile connectivity alongside WiFi services under controlled conditions.

The draft further clarifies that spectrum fees are not being applied at this stage but may be reviewed in the future depending on policy updates.

Authorities have also stated that license transfer will require prior approval. Violations of rules may lead to suspension or cancellation of services.

Overall, in-flight WiFi Pakistan could mark a major shift in the country’s aviation industry, bringing it closer to global standards of in-flight connectivity.
