Apple unveils M6 chip and M5 Ultra with major AI upgrades
Apple has introduced its next-generation M6 chip alongside the more powerful M5 Ultra, expanding its focus on faster performance, better efficiency and on-device artificial intelligence.
The M6 will be used in the base-model Mac mini, while the M5 Ultra will be available exclusively in the Mac Studio. Both processors are designed to handle demanding tasks while improving overall system efficiency.
M6 becomes Apple’s first 2nm chip
One of the biggest changes in the M6 is its manufacturing technology. Apple says the processor is its first chip built using a 2-nanometer process.
The smaller manufacturing process is expected to help Apple improve performance and efficiency. The company says the chip is aimed at students, developers and everyday users who need strong computing power.
The M6 features a 12-core CPU. This includes two high-performance super cores, four performance cores and six efficiency cores.
According to Apple, single-threaded performance is up to 1.2 times faster than the M5. It is also claimed to be up to 2.4 times faster than the original M1 chip.
These improvements could make everyday tasks smoother while also helping users handle more demanding workloads. Developers and professionals working with complex applications may benefit from the stronger processing capability.
Bigger focus on AI and graphics
Artificial intelligence is another major part of the M6 upgrade. The chip comes with a 12-core GPU, and every GPU core includes a Neural Accelerator designed to improve AI workloads.
Apple says GPU compute performance for AI is nearly 30% faster than the M5. The company has also made changes to the graphics architecture, including improvements to Dynamic Caching and hardware-accelerated ray tracing.
These upgrades are particularly important for users working with graphics-heavy applications. They could also improve gaming performance and provide smoother visuals in demanding games such as Cyberpunk 2077.
The stronger AI hardware also allows more tasks to be processed directly on the device. This can reduce reliance on cloud-based processing for compatible workloads while maintaining faster response times.
Memory performance gets a boost
The M6 supports up to 32GB of unified memory. Its memory bandwidth can reach 170GB/s, giving the processor more capacity to move data between different parts of the system.
Apple says this represents a 10% increase over the M5. The new figure is also around 2.5 times higher than the bandwidth offered by the first generation of Apple Silicon chips.
Higher memory bandwidth can be useful when running demanding applications. It is especially important for AI workloads, video editing, graphics processing and other tasks that require large amounts of data to be handled quickly.
The combination of the new manufacturing process, expanded CPU and GPU capabilities and improved memory performance makes the M6 a significant step forward for Apple Silicon.

M5 Ultra targets high-end Mac Studio
While the M6 is aimed at the broader Mac market, Apple is positioning the M5 Ultra for more demanding users through the Mac Studio.
