World Cup opener: Saudi Arabia draw 1–1 with Uruguay
Saudi Arabia came close to a major upset but were held to a 1–1 draw by Uruguay in their World Cup opener at Miami Stadium. A late equaliser from Maxi Araujo spoiled what could have been a historic win for the Saudis.
The Green Falcons had taken the lead in the 41st minute when Abdulelah Alamri found the net, giving Saudi fans hope of repeating their famous 2–1 win over Argentina in the 2022 World Cup.
Uruguay, however, continued to press and nearly scored early through Araujo, but Saudi goalkeeper Mohammed Alowais made a strong save. The South American side struggled to break down a well-organised Saudi defence in the first half.
Saudi Arabia also created chances of their own, with Alamri forcing another save from Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera shortly after the opener. After the break, Uruguay improved their rhythm following tactical changes. They began using the wings more effectively and increased pressure on the Saudi defence.

The breakthrough came late in the match when Uruguay finally found space in the box. Although Alowais saved the initial attempt, Maxi Araujo reacted quickly to the rebound and calmly finished to level the score at 1–1. In the final minutes, both teams pushed hard for a winner. Federico Valverde and Jose Maria Gimenez came close for Uruguay, but Alowais made crucial saves to keep Saudi Arabia in the game.
Saudi Arabia coach Georgios Donis praised his team’s effort but admitted that fatigue played a role in the closing stages. Uruguay coach Marcelo Bielsa, however, called it a missed opportunity, saying his side should have secured all three points. Despite the draw, Saudi Arabia showed strong defensive discipline and fighting spirit, while Uruguay will feel they let a win slip away.
