Switzerland defeat Canada as both reach last 32
Switzerland finished top of World Cup Group B after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over co-hosts Canada. Despite the defeat, Canada also celebrated after reaching the knockout stage for the first time in the country’s history. Both teams entered the match knowing that a win would secure first place in the group and potentially provide a more favourable route in the next round.
After an entertaining first half ended goalless, Switzerland took control shortly after the break. Ruben Vargas opened the scoring when he finished a well-worked move following a dangerous cross from Johan Manzambi.
Switzerland doubled their lead in the 57th minute through Manzambi, who continued his impressive tournament form by scoring his third goal of the competition. The young midfielder capitalised on a goalkeeping error to put his side firmly in command.
Canada refused to give up and continued pushing forward in front of their home supporters. Their efforts were rewarded when substitute Promise David pulled a goal back after converting an excellent pass from Nathan Saliba.

The goal set up an exciting finish as Canada searched for an equaliser that would have sent them through as group winners. However, Switzerland defended resolutely and held on to secure all three points. The victory lifted Switzerland to seven points and ensured first place in Group B. The Swiss side will now remain in Vancouver and prepare for a last-32 clash against one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.
Canada finished second in the group with four points, enough to secure a historic place in the knockout stage. Before the 2026 World Cup, Canada had never won a match at the finals, making this achievement a significant milestone for the national team. Canada coach Jesse Marsch praised his players for their determination and fighting spirit, saying the team had achieved one of its major objectives by reaching the knockout rounds.
Earlier, injured Canadian midfielder Ismael Kone received a warm standing ovation from fans after entering the stadium in a wheelchair. He suffered a broken leg during Canada’s previous victory over Qatar. Meanwhile, Bosnia-Herzegovina finished third in Group B after defeating Qatar 3-1. They must now wait to see whether their four points are enough to qualify as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.
