Bosnia edge closer to World Cup history after beating Qatar
Bosnia-Herzegovina boosted their hopes of reaching the World Cup knockout stage for the first time by securing an impressive 3-1 victory over Qatar in their final Group B match.
The important win lifted Bosnia to four points and placed them in a strong position to qualify as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams. Qatar, meanwhile, were eliminated at the group stage, repeating their disappointing exit from the 2022 World Cup.
Bosnia made a fast start and created several chances in the opening minutes. Their early pressure was finally rewarded when 18-year-old Kerim Alajbegovic, the youngest Bosnian player to appear at a World Cup, scored a stunning goal from outside the penalty area after beating two defenders. The European side doubled their lead shortly afterwards when a shot from veteran striker Edin Dzeko took a deflection and eventually went into the net off Qatar goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada, resulting in an own goal.
Dzeko, who was making his 150th international appearance, remained a constant threat and came close to scoring himself when his effort struck the post. Qatar fought back before half-time through their experienced captain Hassan Al-Haydos. The 35-year-old midfielder reduced the deficit in the 42nd minute and gave his team renewed hope heading into the second half.

However, Qatar suffered another setback when Al-Haydos was forced off the field with an injury in the 55th minute, bringing a disappointing end to his match. The game remained competitive until the closing stages, but Bosnia sealed the victory in the 80th minute when Ermin Mahmic scored his second goal in consecutive matches. His strike sparked wild celebrations among Bosnian players and supporters.
The victory leaves Bosnia on the verge of a historic achievement, with qualification for the last 32 looking increasingly likely. The team will now wait for results in other groups to determine their final position among the best third-placed sides. For Qatar, the defeat ended their World Cup campaign and continued their struggle to make an impact on football’s biggest stage. Despite showing moments of promise, they were unable to overcome Bosnia’s attacking quality and strong start.
