Switzerland beat Algeria to reach World Cup last 16
Switzerland secured a comfortable 2-0 victory over Algeria to qualify for the FIFA World Cup Round of 16. A well-organised performance and two well-taken goals helped the Swiss side book their place in the knockout stage, where they will face either Colombia or Ghana.
Switzerland made the perfect start when striker Breel Embolo opened the scoring in the 10th minute. The move began with Switzerland winning possession in their own half before Johan Manzambi raced down the left wing and delivered a precise pass for Embolo to score from close range.
After taking the lead, Switzerland tightened its defence and controlled the match with smart tactics. Head coach Murat Yakin adjusted his team’s shape to close down space, making it difficult for Algeria to create meaningful chances.
Algeria struggled to break through the Swiss defence and created very few clear opportunities. Their best chance came just before half-time when Ibrahim Maza’s effort went wide of the near post.
Switzerland doubled its lead soon after the second half began. A failed clearance by the Algerian defence allowed Dan Ndoye to collect the ball inside the penalty area before calmly placing his shot beyond goalkeeper Luca Zidane.

Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez had an opportunity to reduce the deficit, but his shot was blocked by a defender. Despite their efforts to respond, Algeria found it difficult to break down Switzerland’s disciplined defensive setup.
Switzerland continued to threaten with quick counterattacks while protecting its lead with confidence. Substitute Fabian Rieder missed a late chance to make it 3-0, but it had no impact on the final result.
The victory sends Switzerland into the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 with growing confidence, while Algeria’s campaign comes to an end after a disappointing defeat.
