Pakistan face tough Group B challenge
Pakistan will face Thailand, the Philippines and Vietnam after being drawn in Division One of Group B for the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026.
The tournament is a newly established regional competition organised by FIFA in collaboration with ASEAN. It will bring together national teams from ASEAN countries along with selected guest teams.
For Pakistan, the competition carries special importance because it will be the men’s national team’s first appearance in a FIFA tournament of this kind.
The tournament will run from September 24 to October 5, with Division One matches taking place in Indonesia. Pakistan will now have a major challenge against three established teams in the region.
Their campaign is scheduled to begin against Thailand on September 26. The team will then play the Philippines on October 2 before facing Vietnam in their final group match.
The results of these games will decide whether Pakistan can move forward to the final stage of the competition.
Pakistan to open campaign against Thailand
Pakistan’s first match will be against Thailand on September 26, giving the national side a difficult start to the tournament.
Thailand are among the stronger football teams in the region, making the opening game an important test for Pakistan. The national team will need a strong start if it wants to challenge for a place in the final.
Pakistan will then meet the Philippines on October 2. That match could become especially important depending on the results of the opening group games.
Their final group fixture will come against Vietnam. With the teams playing a single round-robin format, every match could have a major impact on the final standings.
The tournament format means there will be little room for teams to recover from poor results. Pakistan will therefore need to remain focused throughout the group stage.
14 teams set to compete
The FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 will feature 14 national teams in total. The line-up includes 11 ASEAN member states and three guest teams.
The competition has been divided into two divisions, with Division One featuring the stronger group of teams. Pakistan have been placed in this division alongside Bangladesh as guest participants.
Division One includes Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, along with Bangladesh and Pakistan.
Division Two will feature Hong Kong, China, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Timor-Leste. These teams will compete separately for their own final.
Both divisions have been split into two groups. Teams in each group will play each other once, creating a short but competitive route toward the finals.
The format is designed to give teams several competitive matches while keeping the tournament compact.

How the tournament will reach the finals
The winners of the two groups in each division will qualify for their respective finals.
In Division One, the two group runners-up will also have another opportunity to finish strongly. They will meet in a third-place play-off after the group stage.
The Division One final is scheduled for October 5. For Pakistan, reaching that stage would represent a major achievement during their first appearance in the competition.
The tournament will be hosted by Indonesia and Hong Kong, China. Division One matches are scheduled to be played in Indonesia, while Division Two will take place in Hong Kong, China.
The competition will also provide the participating teams with an opportunity to gain experience against different opponents in a new regional setting.
