The Netherlands looked set for victory when Cody Gakpo scored in the second half after finishing a well-worked team move. The Liverpool forward was overcome with emotion after finding the net, just days after he and his partner suffered the heartbreaking loss of their unborn child.
Morocco refused to give up and found a dramatic equaliser in stoppage time. Issa Diop headed home from Chemsdine Talbi’s cross to force the match into extra time and keep Morocco’s World Cup dream alive.
Morocco created several dangerous chances throughout the match. Neil El Aynaoui and Achraf Hakimi both tested Netherlands goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, who produced a series of outstanding saves to keep his side in the contest.
The Netherlands enjoyed more possession but struggled to create clear scoring opportunities. Morocco continued to threaten on the counterattack and almost scored again in extra time, but Verbruggen produced another excellent save to deny Soufiane Rahimi.
