Paraguay beat Germany on penalties to reach last 16
Paraguay produced one of the biggest surprises of the FIFA World Cup by defeating Germany 4-3 in a dramatic penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw. The victory sent Paraguay into the next round and ended Germany’s campaign in the Round of 32.
The defeat was historic for Germany, as it marked the first time the team had ever lost a penalty shootout at a FIFA World Cup. It also ended Germany’s first appearance in the knockout stage since winning the tournament in 2014.
Paraguay took a surprise lead before half-time through Julio Enciso. The forward headed home from a cross after Germany failed to clear the danger, putting the four-time champions under pressure. Germany improved after the break and equalised in the 54th minute when Kai Havertz scored his third goal of the tournament with a well-placed header from Florian Wirtz’s cross.
Both teams pushed for a winner, but disciplined defending and excellent goalkeeping kept the score level. During extra time, Jonathan Tah thought he had given Germany the lead, but his goal was ruled out following a VAR review for a foul on Paraguay’s goalkeeper.

The match was eventually decided in a tense penalty shootout. Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill emerged as the hero by making crucial saves from Kai Havertz and Nick Woltemade to keep his team in control. Although Paraguay missed two opportunities to seal the victory, Jose Canale converted the winning penalty after Jonathan Tah blasted Germany’s final spot-kick over the crossbar, sparking wild celebrations among the Paraguay players and fans.
The victory is being described as one of the greatest in Paraguay’s history at the FIFA World Cup. The South American side will now face France in the next round if the French team defeat Sweden. Germany’s hopes of lifting another FIFA World Cup trophy ended much earlier than expected. Despite creating several chances, they failed to break down Paraguay’s disciplined defence and ultimately paid the price in the penalty shootout.
