Martinelli's 95th-minute goal sends Brazil into last 16
Brazil booked their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 after substitute Gabriel Martinelli scored a dramatic winning goal in the 95th minute to seal a thrilling 2-1 victory over Japan. Japan stunned Brazil by taking the lead in the 29th minute through Kaishu Sano. The midfielder won possession after a Brazilian mistake, drove forward, and calmly finished past goalkeeper Alisson to score his first international goal.
Brazil struggled to create clear chances in the first half despite dominating possession. Japan defended well and looked confident as they protected their lead against the five-time world champions. Coach Carlo Ancelotti made changes after the break, bringing on young striker Endrick for the injured Lucas Paqueta. The substitutions helped Brazil increase the pressure on Japan’s defence.
Brazil finally found the equaliser 11 minutes into the second half when veteran midfielder Casemiro headed home from a cross delivered by Gabriel. The goal completely shifted the momentum in Brazil’s favour.

Vinicius Junior became more dangerous as the match progressed and came close to scoring, but his effort struck the post after an excellent save by Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki. Japan defended bravely and looked set to force extra time. However, deep into stoppage time, Martinelli came off the bench to score the winning goal in the 95th minute, sending Brazil’s supporters into celebration and ending Japan’s impressive World Cup campaign.
The victory sends Brazil into the Round of 16, where they will face either the Ivory Coast or Norway in New Jersey. Japan, which had hoped to win its first-ever World Cup knockout match, saw its dream come to a heartbreaking end. Brazil, whose last FIFA World Cup title came in 2002, remains in the hunt for a record sixth championship, while Japan leaves the tournament after another determined and spirited performance.
