Colombia top Group K after goalless draw with Portugal
Colombia finished first in Group K after holding Portugal to a goalless draw in their final group-stage match. Both teams had already qualified for the knockout rounds before kick-off, but the result confirmed Colombia as the group winners. By topping the group, Colombia will face Ghana in the Round of 32 after the African side suffered a 2-1 defeat to Croatia. Portugal, which finished second, will take on Croatia in the next round.
Both teams created several chances during an entertaining contest, but neither side was able to find the breakthrough. Portugal came close in the first half when Bruno Fernandes tested Colombia goalkeeper Camilo Vargas, who made an excellent save to keep the score level. Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa also played a key role, making six important saves—more than he had managed in Portugal’s previous two group-stage matches combined.
Colombia thought they had claimed a dramatic late winner in stoppage time when Davinson Sánchez headed the ball into the net. However, the goal was ruled out for offside after a VAR review.
