How Pakistan ended 74-year wait for football glory by beating Afghanistan
The historic final was played at the National Football Stadium in Male, where Pakistan delivered a disciplined and confident performance. The win gave Pakistan its first standalone international football title and sparked celebrations among fans.
Pakistan started the match aggressively and controlled possession for long periods. Their attacking approach paid off in the 24th minute when forward Shayak Dost produced a spectacular bicycle kick to put his side ahead.

The goal came after a mis-hit attempt from midfielder Otis Khan inside the penalty area. The ball floated perfectly toward Dost, who converted the chance with an acrobatic finish that stunned Afghanistan.
Afghanistan tried hard to respond and pushed forward in search of an equaliser. However, Pakistan’s defence remained organized and protected the lead until the end of the first half.

The second half followed a similar pattern as Afghanistan continued to press for a goal. Pakistan made several substitutions but maintained their shape and prevented their opponents from finding the net.
Despite repeated Afghan attacks, Pakistan’s defenders and goalkeeper stood firm under pressure. The Green Shirts successfully held their advantage and ensured the scoreline remained in their favour until the final whistle.
The victory was especially significant because it marked Pakistan’s first appearance in a senior men’s international final since the 1991 South Asian Games. In that tournament, Pakistan had also defeated the Maldives 2-0 to claim gold.
The latest triumph also ended a 74-year wait for a standalone international football title. Pakistan’s previous major success came in 1952 when they shared the Asian Quadrangular Football Tournament crown with India in a round-robin competition.
Players, officials and supporters described the achievement as a major step forward for football in Pakistan. Many believe the success could inspire a new generation of players and help raise the sport’s profile across the country.
Pakistan’s victory shows clear progress in the national football team’s development. If the momentum continues, this success could become a turning point for football in the country and bring greater confidence ahead of future international competitions.
