Harry Kane sends England into World Cup last 16
England secured a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over Congo in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32. Harry Kane scored two second-half goals to rescue his team from an early exit and send the 1966 champions into the last 16.
Congo shocked England by taking an early lead and looked capable of producing one of the biggest upsets of the tournament. England struggled to break down Congo’s determined defence, while the goalkeeper made several outstanding saves to keep his side in front.
However, England refused to give up. Harry Kane stepped up in the second half and scored twice to complete a remarkable comeback. His goals secured England’s place in the next round and ended Congo’s impressive run.
The victory was only England’s second FIFA World Cup win after conceding the opening goal. The first came in the 1966 FIFA World Cup final against West Germany, making this another memorable comeback in the team’s history.
After the match, Kane said England remained confident throughout the game and believed their opportunity would come. He added that every player was ready to become the team’s hero and that, on this occasion, it was his turn to make the difference.

England head coach Thomas Tuchel praised his players for showing determination, belief and composure under pressure. He also credited the team for refusing to accept defeat despite Congo’s outstanding defensive performance and their goalkeeper’s several excellent saves.
Kane’s two goals increased his tally to five in the tournament. He also extended his record as England’s all-time leading scorer in major international tournaments to 13 goals and now has 84 goals for his national team.
England will now face co-host Mexico in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 at the famous Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. The match will bring back memories of England’s historic 1986 FIFA World Cup quarter-final defeat to Argentina at the same venue.
