Early Saibari strike lifts Morocco past Scotland in crucial Group C clash
Morocco claimed a crucial victory in Group C of the FIFA World Cup 2026 after edging Scotland 1-0 in a tightly contested encounter at Boston Stadium.
The North Africans made a dream start, taking the lead just 71 seconds after kick-off. Midfielder Bilal El Khannouss Saibari capitalised on an early opportunity and calmly slotted the ball into the net to give Morocco a 1-0 advantage.
Morocco maintained an attacking approach following the opener and looked determined to extend their lead. Scotland, however, gradually settled into the game and pushed forward in search of an equaliser.
Despite creating several chances, the Scottish side struggled to break down Morocco's disciplined defence during the first half, which ended with the African nation holding a narrow lead.
Scotland returned after the break with renewed energy and enjoyed more possession in the second half. Their passing improved significantly, and they launched a series of attacks, but Morocco's backline remained organised and resilient.
The Scots came close on a few occasions but failed to find the finishing touch as Morocco successfully protected their early advantage until the final whistle.
The victory earned Morocco three valuable points and strengthened their position in Group C as the race for the knockout stage intensifies.
Although Scotland suffered a disappointing defeat, their hopes of advancing to the next round remain alive. Steve Clarke's side will now turn its focus to the final group-stage match, knowing a positive result could still secure qualification.
