USA storm into knockout stage with historic World Cup win over Australia
Co-hosts the United States booked their place in the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup 2026 after a dominant 2-0 victory over Australia in a crucial Group D clash at Seattle Stadium.
The Americans controlled the match from the opening whistle, enjoying 63 percent possession and constantly putting pressure on Australia's defence.
Their breakthrough came in the 11th minute when Australian defender Cameron Burgess accidentally turned the ball into his own net, handing the hosts an early lead.
The United States continued to dictate play and doubled their advantage just before half-time. Alex Freeman found the back of the net after a well-worked move, giving the home side a comfortable 2-0 cushion heading into the break.
Australia attempted to fight back in the second half and created several scoring opportunities, but the American defence remained solid and prevented the Socceroos from getting back into the game.
The result marked a historic moment for the United States, as the team recorded consecutive World Cup victories for the first time in the tournament's 96-year history. The Americans had opened their campaign with an impressive 4-1 win over Paraguay and now sit top of Group D with six points.
With qualification already secured, the United States will now focus on maintaining its perfect record in the final group-stage match against Turkey. Australia, meanwhile, faces a must-win encounter against Paraguay to keep its hopes of reaching the next round alive.
