Canada make World Cup history with late win over South Africa
Canada made FIFA World Cup history by reaching the Round of 16 for the first time after Stephen Eustaquio scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner to secure a 1-0 victory over South Africa at Los Angeles Stadium. South Africa controlled much of the match and enjoyed 58.2% possession. However, Canada stayed organised, defended resolutely and waited patiently for their opportunity.
The match remained goalless for almost the entire 90 minutes and appeared to be heading for extra time. Just when the game seemed destined for another 30 minutes, Canada found the breakthrough dramatically.
The winning goal came after Alistair Johnston surged down the right and delivered a hopeful cross into the penalty area. South Africa cleared the ball only as far as Stephen Eustaquio, who controlled it with his chest before firing a low shot into the bottom corner, leaving goalkeeper Ronwen Williams with no chance. It was Eustaquio’s first international goal for Canada in more than two years.

Canada had created several chances before the decisive goal. In the second half, Tani Oluwaseyi forced an excellent save from Williams, while Jonathan David was denied by a brilliant goal-line clearance from Mbekezeli Mbokazi.
Earlier in the match, Moise Bombito also came close to scoring when his powerful header from a corner was cleared off the line by Aubrey Modiba, keeping South Africa level. After the final whistle, Canada coach Jesse Marsch praised his players for their determination and teamwork. He told the squad that the historic achievement was the result of the hard work they had put in together over the past two years.
The victory sends Canada into the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 for the first time in the nation’s history, while South Africa’s brave performance was not enough to keep their tournament hopes alive.
