Paraguayan swimmer Luana Alonso retires at 20 after defeat at Olympics

PARIS: (Web Desk) Paraguayan swimmer Luana Alonso has announced her retirement at the age of 20 after a defeat at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Social media star Luana Alonso, who has more than 39,000 followers on Instagram, shocked fans by announcing her retirement on her account after bowing out in the first round of the women’s 100m butterfly race.

The Paraguayan star was sixth in the race, 0.24 seconds behind Georgia’s Anna Nazaradze. She narrowly missed out on qualifying for the semi-finals.

Luana Alonso announced her retirement after the defeat and apologised to the people of Paraguay.

She later said in a media interview that she is happy to end her career at the Olympic Games. She said this was her last race, adding she had been swimming for a long time.

Luana Alonso participated in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics at the age of 17, followed by the World Aquatics Championships in Budapest and the South American Games in Ascension 2022.
