Punjab winter forecast: Lahore to feel the cold in November as temperatures drop
Winter expected to begin in November
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, weather patterns have changed over the past eight to ten years. These changes have led to later winters and a shorter period of severe cold.
Muhammad Aleem-ul-Hassan, a director at the Meteorological Department, told Express News that Pakistan’s usual winter season runs from November 15 to March 15.
He said global warming, greenhouse gas emissions and changes in air circulation are affecting temperatures and seasonal weather patterns.
Severe cold period becomes shorter
The director said the period of severe cold has decreased from around 75 days to nearly 50 days. Temperatures during both the day and night have also increased.
This means people may experience fewer days of intense cold than in the past. However, winter in Punjab can still bring cooler weather, depending on changing conditions.
The department’s three-month forecast suggests that rainfall may remain close to normal this season, while temperatures could stay slightly above average.
Weather system may bring cooler temperatures
A relatively strong western weather system is expected during the last days of October and the first week of November.
According to the director, this system could lower temperatures and make the cold more noticeable for people living in Lahore and other plains of Punjab.
However, the change is expected to happen gradually. The arrival of cooler weather does not necessarily mean that the full winter season will begin immediately.

Why Lahore remains warm during the day
The director explained that relatively warm winds from the south and southeast often keep daytime temperatures high across Lahore and nearby plains.
At night, temperatures fall when wind direction changes or wind speed decreases.
Last week, daytime maximum temperatures in the plains ranged between 34°C and 36°C. They have now fallen to around 30°C to 33°C.
The Lahore weather update shows a gradual decline in temperatures, although the regular winter period may still take some time to arrive.
Smog conditions depend on wind direction
The Punjab government has taken several steps to control smog. These include preventing the burning of crop residue, monitoring industrial units and brick kilns, and cleaning roads.
However, the director said smog levels also depend on wind direction, wind speed and how air pollution spreads.
Winds from the north or northwest may lower temperatures and help disperse polluted particles. In contrast, winds from the southeast carrying pollution can affect air quality.
Upcoming weather systems may create conditions that help pollution spread, but the actual intensity and duration of smog will depend on the weather at the time.
