Pakistan heatwave alert: Heatstroke prevention and safety advisory
The Pakistan Meteorological Department has issued a nationwide weather forecast warning of continued hot and dry conditions across Pakistan, with temperatures expected to remain significantly above normal levels.
Major cities including Lahore, Islamabad, and Karachi are experiencing rising heat intensity, with no significant rainfall expected in the coming days.
In Lahore, early morning conditions recorded a temperature of 31°C, humidity at 35 percent, and light winds around 11 km/h. Meteorologists expect the maximum temperature to reach up to 42°C, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses.
At the same time, the National Disaster Management Authority has issued a nationwide heatwave alert, warning citizens about increased risks of heatstroke, dehydration, and other serious health conditions.
NDMA Heatstroke Prevention Guidelines and Emergency Preparedness
The NDMA has urged citizens to take immediate precautionary measures during the ongoing heatwave. Key advice includes avoiding unnecessary exposure to direct sunlight, staying hydrated, and minimizing outdoor activity during peak heat hours.
Authorities have instructed all relevant departments to activate heatwave response plans, establish cooling centers in public places, and ensure hospitals remain on high alert for emergencies.
Provincial and district administrations have also been directed to remain fully prepared to respond to heat-related emergencies across the country.

What to Do During a Heatwave
Health experts recommend the following protective steps to reduce the risk of heatstroke:
- Drink plenty of water throughout the day even if not thirsty
- Stay indoors or in shaded and cool areas during peak sunlight hours
- Wear light colored loose and breathable clothing
- Use hats umbrellas or protective covers when going outside
- Keep windows and rooms ventilated or use cooling devices where possible
- Check on elderly people children and outdoor workers regularly
What to Avoid During Extreme Heat
Authorities strongly advise avoiding the following behaviors during heatwave conditions:
- Direct exposure to sunlight for long periods
- Outdoor physical activities during midday heat
- Leaving children or elderly individuals in parked vehicles
- Excessive intake of caffeine energy drinks or sugary beverages
- Ignoring symptoms like dizziness fatigue or headache
- Overexertion in hot and humid environments
First Aid for Heatstroke Emergency
If someone is suffering or showing signs of heatstroke such as confusion high body temperature or unconsciousness immediate action is critical:
- Move the person to a cool shaded or air conditioned place
- Remove excess clothing to help body cool down
- Apply cool water or wet cloths on the body especially head neck and armpits
- Fan the person or use ventilation to lower body temperature
- Give small sips of water only if the person is conscious
- Seek emergency medical help immediately or call local emergency services
- Do not give fluids if the person is unconscious or vomiting

Officials warn that prolonged exposure to extreme heat can quickly become life threatening, especially for vulnerable groups including children, elderly individuals, and outdoor laborers.
