NDMA issues nationwide alert for heavy rain and snowfall
(Web Desk): The NDMA warns of heavy rain and snowfall across Sindh, Punjab, Balochistan, and KP, urging residents to prepare for possible travel disruptions soon.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a comprehensive Pakistan weather alert, forecasting a significant spell of heavy rain and snowfall across the country. According to the latest advisory, a strong weather system is moving through Punjab, with major urban centers including Lahore, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, and Sargodha expected to witness downpours within the next 24 to 48 hours.

The federal capital, Islamabad, is also braced for intense rainfall during this window. These conditions are expected to significantly drop temperatures and could lead to localized urban flooding in low-lying areas if the rainfall persists.

Snowfall Forecast for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Northern Areas

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), the NDMA highlights a dual threat of rain and heavy snow. While most districts in the province will see varying degrees of rainfall, the higher altitudes are preparing for a heavy blanket of snow. Specifically, popular tourist destinations and mountainous regions such as Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Kohistan, Naran, Kaghan, and the Galiyat are under a strict snowfall watch.

These regions are particularly vulnerable to landslides and road closures. Travelers and tourists are advised to check road conditions before heading toward these northern hubs, as heavy snow accumulation often leads to "black ice" and extremely slippery driving conditions.

Safety Protocols and Emergency Readiness

To mitigate the risks associated with the winter storm, the NDMA has directed provincial disaster management authorities and local rescue teams to remain on high alert. Road maintenance crews have been mobilized to clear potential blockages caused by snow or debris in the hilly terrains of Balochistan and KP.

The public is encouraged to:

  • Avoid unnecessary travel in mountainous regions during the alert period.
  • Ensure vehicles are equipped for slippery roads (chains and functional heaters).
  • Stay updated via official NDMA channels for real-time hazard warnings.

Through these early warnings, the NDMA aims to minimize property damage and ensure public safety during this period of unpredictable weather.
