Several motorway sections across Pakistan were closed overnight as dense fog engulfed large parts of Punjab, Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, significantly reducing visibility and creating hazardous driving conditions, officials confirmed.
According to a spokesperson for the National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP), the closures were implemented late Monday night into Tuesday morning to protect lives and property amid worsening weather conditions.
Closed Motorway Sections
The following motorway sections were closed for all types of traffic due to poor visibility:
- M1 from Peshawar to Burhan
- M2 from Lahore to Islamabad
- M3 from Faizpur to Jaranwala
- M4 from Pindi Bhattian to Abdul Hakin
- M5 from Multan to Rohri
- M11 from Lahore to Sambrial
Officials said the decision was taken after visibility levels dropped to dangerous limits, increasing the risk of serious accidents.

Motorway Police Issue Safety Advisory
The Motorway Police warned that lane violations during foggy conditions could lead to deadly crashes and urged motorists to strictly follow lane discipline. Drivers were advised to reduce speed, avoid sudden braking, and maintain a safe distance from vehicles ahead.
To minimize risk, commuters were encouraged to prefer daytime travel, with authorities identifying 10:00 am to 6:00 pm as the safest window when visibility is relatively improved.
Guidelines for Driving in Fog
The NHMP issued detailed safety guidelines for motorists traveling during fog:
- Reduce speed and drive cautiously
- Use fog lights and low-beam headlights
- Maintain a safe distance from other vehicles
- Avoid sudden lane changes or abrupt braking
- Strictly follow lane discipline
- Avoid unnecessary travel, especially at night and early morning
Motorists were also advised to consider alternative routes such as GT Road, where feasible.

Monitoring, Alerts and Helpline
Authorities emphasized that fog conditions during the winter season can worsen suddenly, particularly during late-night and early-morning hours. Monitoring teams have been deployed on major routes to manage traffic flow and respond quickly to changing conditions.
Commuters were urged to stay updated through official advisories and contact the Motorway Police helpline 130 for real-time traffic updates, route guidance, or emergency assistance.
Officials warned that additional motorway closures or restrictions may be imposed if visibility deteriorates again, stressing that public cooperation is critical to ensuring road safety during ongoing winter fog spells.
