Heatwave alert issued for Eid holidays in Punjab
The Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a heatwave alert ahead of Eidul Azha holidays, warning that temperatures across many districts may rise dangerously in the coming days.
According to the PDMA spokesperson, most districts of Punjab are expected to face intense heat, with temperatures likely to remain 4°C to 7°C above normal. Authorities said the heatwave could continue even during nighttime, increasing health risks for citizens.
The department warned that temperatures in Lahore, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Faisalabad and Sialkot may climb up to 42°C. Meanwhile, southern and central districts including Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan, Sargodha and Jhang could witness temperatures touching 50°C.
Citizens have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and outdoor activities between 10am and 5pm. People were urged to drink plenty of water and use cold beverages to stay hydrated.
PDMA also advised residents to wear light-colored cotton clothes and use caps or umbrellas while going outside. Parents and caregivers were specifically instructed to keep children and elderly people indoors during peak heat hours.
Special instructions were also issued for livestock markets during Eidul Azha. Authorities directed traders to arrange shaded areas and clean drinking water for animals. Citizens were encouraged to place water bowls for birds and regularly sprinkle water on animals to protect them from extreme heat.
PDMA said medical and veterinary camps are also being set up at cattle markets and public places. Citizens can contact the PDMA helpline 1129 in case of emergency or for heatwave-related information.
