Heatwave alert issued as temperature may hit 47°C
Provincial Disaster Management Authority has issued a heatwave alert for several districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, warning that temperatures may rise sharply between May 8 and 10.
According to the advisory, plain areas of the province are expected to face intense heat during daytime hours. District administrations across the province have been directed to take precautionary measures in advance to avoid emergencies linked to extreme weather.
PDMA said temperatures in Dera Ismail Khan, Tank, Bannu, Karak and Lakki Marwat may rise between 43°C and 47°C.
Meanwhile, temperatures in Peshawar, Nowshera, Charsadda, Mardan, Swabi, Haripur and Kohat are expected to remain between 39°C and 43°C.
The authority has instructed relevant departments to establish heatstroke centres, cooling points and mobile cooling units in vulnerable areas. Rescue 1122 teams and fire brigade staff have also been directed to remain on emergency standby.
Hospitals across the province have been ordered to ensure the availability of medical staff, medicines and emergency facilities to deal with possible heat-related illnesses.
