The Pakistan Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis has announced that skilled and educated Pakistani workers can now apply for Germany’s “Opportunity Card” (Chancenkarte), allowing them to live in Germany for up to one year to seek employment without a prior job offer. This initiative offers Pakistanis a structured path to gain legal employment and potentially secure permanent residence in Germany.
The Opportunity Card is designed to attract non-EU skilled professionals to Germany’s labor market. Holders can legally reside in Germany for 12 months, apply for jobs, attend interviews, and even participate in trial or short-term work. Part-time work up to 20 hours per week is allowed, enabling applicants to cover living expenses while searching for suitable employment. Once a permanent position is secured, Opportunity Card holders can apply for a work visa or EU Blue Card to continue long-term residency.
Eligibility Criteria for Pakistani Applicants
To qualify for the Germany Opportunity Card, applicants must meet certain requirements:
- Educational Qualification: Minimum of two years of vocational training or a university degree.
- Language Skills: Basic proficiency in German (A1) or English (B2).
- Financial Solvency: Proof of funds to cover living costs for 12 months (currently at least €1,027 per month).
- Points System: Non-automatically skilled workers must accumulate at least six points based on qualifications, work experience, age, and other factors.

Benefits for Pakistani Skilled Workers
The Opportunity Card provides Pakistani workers with a legal, organized path to employment in Germany without a pre-arranged job. It allows trial employment to assess job suitability, part-time work to cover expenses, and a clear route toward permanent residence. This initiative is particularly attractive for highly skilled Pakistani professionals looking for career growth, international experience, and long-term settlement in Europe.
