Sindh teacher facial recognition attendance system fails on first day
The School Education Department launched the pilot phase of the FRAMES attendance system across six districts of Sindh, including Karachi East, Hyderabad, Naushahro Feroze, Jacobabad, Ghotki and Umerkot.
Around 49,565 teaching and non-teaching employees are included in the pilot programme.
Teachers unable to mark attendance
At Idara Sharqia Government Girls Secondary School in Jacob Lines, Karachi, several teachers could not mark their attendance through the application.
The app displayed messages including “Server is busy, please wait a few seconds and try again” and “School not assigned to user.”
Despite repeated attempts, the problem continued. As teachers could not register their attendance digitally, the school administration returned to the paper-based method.
The issue has raised questions about the readiness of the Sindh teacher attendance system, which is planned to replace manual attendance in public schools.

How the new system will work
The facial recognition attendance system requires employees to record their arrival and departure from school.
The application verifies each employee through facial recognition and records the time of attendance. It is also designed to work without an internet connection.
Employees will also be able to submit leave applications and download their monthly attendance records through the application.
Officials say the FRAMES attendance system is intended to improve transparency and help monitor absenteeism in government schools.
Teachers welcome digital monitoring
Despite the technical problems, teachers described the initiative as a positive move.
They said digital attendance could create a clear record of punctuality and absenteeism. Teachers noted that the scheduled reporting time was 8:15am and said most staff arrived before the required time.
Muhammad Khawar, in-charge of Idara Sharqia Government Girls Secondary School, also welcomed the initiative.
He said the pilot would help teachers become familiar with new technology. He added that digital systems could make administrative procedures in government institutions more transparent and efficient.
The teacher attendance Sindh initiative is expected to remain under review during the pilot phase.

Expansion depends on pilot results
Authorities will assess the performance of the Sindh teacher attendance system before expanding it to more schools.
The facial recognition attendance system could eventually be introduced across Sindh in phases if technical issues are resolved.
The FRAMES attendance system is therefore facing an important test. Its success will depend on whether authorities can fix server, login and school-assignment problems.
