RAWALPINDI (Web Desk): Punjab has approved a major Rawalpindi water project aimed at increasing the supply of clean drinking water to the city and cantonment areas.

The project will use water from Dadocha Dam and is expected to add 35 million gallons of water to the daily supply. The move could bring major relief to residents facing water shortages.

The estimated cost of the project is Rs36,000,000,000, while completion is planned by December 2029.

35 million gallons of water daily

Officials said the project will include a surface water treatment plant and a new supply system. The treated water will then be supplied to Rawalpindi through a dedicated network.

The additional supply is expected to strengthen Rawalpindi water supply and reduce pressure on the city’s existing water resources.

The project is also expected to improve access to clean water Rawalpindi residents, particularly in areas where water shortages have created difficulties for households.

According to officials, work on Dadocha Dam has already reached around 92 percent completion. The remaining construction is being carried out by the Punjab Irrigation Department.

28-kilometre transmission line

A 28-kilometre transmission line will be constructed from the dam to Rawalpindi. A filtration plant and distribution network will also be developed under the plan.

Once completed, the system will help bring treated water from Dadocha Dam to different parts of the city and cantonment.

Officials said the transmission line, filtration plant and distribution network are expected to be completed by December 2029.

The new Rawalpindi water project could become an important part of the city’s future water management as its population continues to grow.

Cost divided between city and cantonment

The Punjab government will bear Rs18,000,000,000 for the portion related to Rawalpindi city.

Another Rs18,000,000,000 will be required for the cantonment area. A decision is still pending on whether the federal government or Punjab government will pay this amount.

The matter will be decided during a Punjab cabinet meeting.

Officials believe the project can improve Rawalpindi water supply and make clean water Rawalpindi residents more accessible.
