Rawalpindi (Web Desk): Rawalpindi has expanded its automatic e-challan system to 14 more locations, allowing smart cameras to detect traffic violations and issue fines without stopping vehicles.

Smart cameras to monitor traffic violations

According to a police spokesperson, the expanded e-challan system uses smart cameras installed at key locations to detect traffic violations automatically.

The cameras record offences such as overspeeding and other traffic violations before electronically issuing e-challans to vehicle owners. Officials said the technology enables authorities to take action without stopping vehicles on busy roads, helping maintain smooth traffic flow while ensuring effective law enforcement.

14 new locations added to the network

The e-challan system has now been activated at 14 additional locations across Rawalpindi.

The newly covered locations include Abid Majeed Road near Army Medical College, Lane 4 on Main Peshawar Road, Raafi Mall on Main Peshawar Road, Chauhar Chowk on Main Peshawar Road and Chishtia Abad Turn on Main Peshawar Road.

The system has also been activated on Rawal Road near Benazir Bhutto Hospital, Hameed Khan Chowk on Murree Road and Committee Chowk near Fish Market on Murree Road.

Police urge motorists to follow traffic rules

Traffic police have advised motorists to obey speed limits and follow all traffic laws to avoid receiving e-challans.

Officials said the expanded camera network will help identify traffic offenders more efficiently while reducing the need for manual enforcement on busy roads. They added that stricter monitoring is expected to encourage safer driving habits and improve overall traffic discipline across the city.

How the e-challan system works

The e-challan system uses high-resolution cameras and automated technology to detect traffic violations in real time.

Once a violation is recorded, the system generates an electronic challan linked to the vehicle’s registration details, enabling authorities to issue fines without directly stopping motorists. Officials said the system improves transparency, minimises human error and ensures that traffic laws are enforced fairly and efficiently.

Authorities believe greater use of technology will encourage motorists to drive responsibly and comply with traffic regulations. Officials also urged citizens to cooperate by following traffic laws, avoiding overspeeding and obeying road signs to help create a safer road environment for everyone
