Rawalpindi breaks 16-year rainfall record after torrential rain

Rawalpindi has recorded its heaviest rainfall in 16 years after torrential rain lashed different parts of the city.

The latest spell brought up to 230mm of rain to some areas, putting local authorities on high alert.

According to a Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) spokesperson, New Katarian recorded the highest rainfall at 230mm.

Shamsabad received 203mm, while Chaklala recorded 206mm and Golra received 157mm of rain.

The unusually heavy rainfall has raised concerns about flooding, particularly around Nullah Lai and other vulnerable areas.

Rainfall breaks previous record

Rawalpindi Cantonment Board Chief Water Engineer Muhammad Ateeq said the latest rainfall had broken a 16-year record. According to the official, a similar level of rainfall was last recorded in 2010.

He said all relevant staff had been placed on high alert on the instructions of the Cantonment Board’s Executive Officer. The administration is closely monitoring rainfall, water flow and the risk of flooding in areas that could be affected by further downpours.

PDMA issues alert near Nullah Lai

The PDMA has issued an alert for residents living near Nullah Lai.

People in vulnerable areas have been advised to take necessary precautions and avoid unnecessary movement near waterways. The warning comes as authorities continue to monitor water levels and weather conditions across Rawalpindi.

The PDMA control room is operating around the clock to track the situation and coordinate the response if conditions worsen. Officials are also prepared to respond to reports of flooding and other rain-related emergencies.

Upstream areas receive heavier rain

Muhammad Ateeq said rainfall in the cantonment areas was comparatively lower than in some upstream locations.

However, areas upstream of Nullah Lai received significantly heavier rainfall. Heavy rain in upstream areas can increase water flow downstream, making monitoring particularly important for communities living near the drain.

Authorities are therefore keeping a close watch on Nullah Lai, even where rainfall has started to ease. The situation could change quickly if another spell of heavy rain affects upstream areas.

Emergency centre set up for residents

An emergency centre has also been established in the cantonment area to assist residents. The facility allows people to contact authorities around the clock in case of an emergency.

Officials in the control room are responding to calls and coordinating with relevant departments when assistance is required.

The arrangement is intended to ensure that residents can quickly report flooding, water accumulation, and other problems caused by heavy rainfall. Authorities have urged citizens to remain alert and follow official instructions.

Six sectors placed under monitoring

According to the chief engineer, the cantonment has been divided into six sectors to improve emergency response. Flood relief camps have been established in these sectors to deal with any emergency that may arise.

The camps will serve as points of coordination for officials during flooding or other rain-related incidents. The move is part of wider preparations to protect residents if water levels rise further. Officials are continuing to monitor conditions and remain ready to respond where necessary.

No major emergency reported so far

Despite the record-breaking rainfall, no major emergency has been reported in the cantonment areas so far. Authorities, however, are maintaining a high level of preparedness because further rainfall could put additional pressure on drainage systems.

The heavy downpour has already tested the city’s ability to manage large volumes of rainwater in a short period. Residents in low-lying and vulnerable areas remain the main focus of the ongoing monitoring.
