Punjab to crack down on misuse of e-taxi scheme
The Punjab government has decided to launch a verification process for beneficiaries of its e-taxi scheme and take strict action against individuals found using subsidised electric taxis for private or household purposes instead of commercial transport.
According to official sources, the move is aimed at ensuring that the government's e-taxi initiative benefits genuine drivers and contributes to the promotion of affordable and environmentally friendly public transport across the province.
Authorities will begin scrutinising the records of registered beneficiaries to determine whether the vehicles are being operated as taxis in line with the scheme's objectives. Officials said complaints had been received that some recipients were using the electric vehicles for personal travel rather than providing passenger transport services.
The government believes such misuse undermines the purpose of the programme and prevents deserving applicants from benefiting from the scheme. Officials warned that those found violating the terms and conditions could face legal action, cancellation of their allotment or other penalties under the programme's regulations.
The Punjab e-taxi scheme was introduced to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles, reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions, and create employment opportunities for drivers. The initiative also aims to modernise the province's transport sector while lowering operating costs for commercial drivers.
Officials said regular inspections and monitoring will continue to ensure transparency and accountability. They added that strict enforcement of the scheme's rules will help protect public funds and ensure that government incentives are used for their intended purpose.
The verification campaign is expected to begin in the coming weeks, with authorities urging all beneficiaries to comply with the scheme's conditions and operate their vehicles as licensed commercial taxis.
