(Web Desk): A deadly heatwave sweeping across Europe has claimed more than 1300 lives, with extreme temperatures straining hospitals, transport and emergency services.

A severe heatwave gripping Europe has claimed more than 1,300 lives since June 21, as temperatures climbed above 40°C in several countries, placing unprecedented pressure on healthcare systems, emergency services and public transport networks.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the ongoing heatwave has affected several European nations, leading to a sharp rise in heat-related illnesses and emergency calls. Hospitals and rescue services have reported an increasing number of patients suffering from dehydration, heatstroke and other temperature-related medical conditions.

WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said many homes, offices and educational institutions across Europe were not designed to withstand such extreme temperatures, making people more vulnerable to the dangerous effects of prolonged heat.

France has been among the hardest-hit countries. Public Health France reported nearly 1,000 excess deaths since Wednesday compared with expected mortality levels. Officials said fatalities increased significantly after June 24, highlighting the growing impact of the prolonged heatwave.

French media also reported that 74 people have drowned in rivers, canals and swimming pools since June 18, as thousands sought relief from the scorching temperatures by entering the water.

Meanwhile, transport services have also been disrupted. In the eastern German city of Leipzig, tram operations were suspended until Monday morning after intense heat melted road asphalt and damaged tram tracks and rail joints.

Health experts have urged older adults, children and people with chronic illnesses to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during peak daytime hours, stay well hydrated and follow official safety guidelines as the extreme weather continues across much of Europe.

Authorities remain on high alert, warning that the heatwave could persist for several more days, increasing health risks and placing additional strain on critical infrastructure.
