Punjab prohibits child marriage under new legislation
Punjab has taken a major step toward protecting children by passing a landmark law that bans child marriage across the province. The Punjab Assembly approved the Child Marriage Restraint (Amendment) Bill 2026 with a majority vote, signaling a strong commitment to safeguarding the rights of minors.
The legislation reflects the vision of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, who has emphasized the importance of protecting young girls and ensuring their well-being and future opportunities. Officials say the law introduces stricter penalties to discourage the practice of underage marriages.
According to authorities, any adult over the age of 18 found marrying a minor will face serious legal consequences. The law also targets those who facilitate such marriages. Parents or guardians involved in arranging or supporting child marriages can be sentenced to two to three years in prison. Additionally, violators may face fines of up to Rs. 500,000.
The government believes these measures will serve as a strong deterrent and significantly reduce the number of child marriages in Punjab. By enforcing stricter regulations, the province aims to create a safer environment where children can pursue education and personal development without early marital pressures.
Meanwhile, the Child Protection Bureau will oversee the implementation of the law to ensure compliance and effectiveness. Authorities remain hopeful that this move will mark a turning point in eliminating child marriage and securing a better future for children across Punjab.
