(Web Desk): Lahore High Court gives Punjab government deadline to reply on kite flying permission for Basant festival.

The Lahore High Court (LHC) has directed the Punjab government to submit a response regarding the permission for kite flying during Basant by December 22, 2025. The hearing was led by Justice Owais, who reviewed a petition filed by the Judicial Activism Panel challenging the Kite Flying Act 2025.

Petition Highlights Safety Concerns

The petition argued that the Punjab government passed the ordinance without assembly approval. It also raised safety concerns, citing previous deaths caused by kite flying and the potential risks to citizens if the festival is permitted again. The petition emphasized that public safety must be prioritized over cultural traditions.

Discussion on Registration Fees

During the hearing, the court also discussed proposed registration fees for kites and kite strings (dores) that would be required for this year’s Basant celebrations. Authorities are expected to clarify how these fees would be implemented if permission is granted.

Public Interest and Cultural Significance

The case has attracted significant public attention as kite flying is a traditional activity in Punjab, especially during Basant. Citizens and kite enthusiasts are keenly awaiting the court’s decision, which will determine whether the beloved festival can proceed this year.
