Punjab ends free metro travel as subsidy withdrawal begins
The Punjab government has officially ended free travel facilities on the province’s mass transit system after removing subsidies, affecting thousands of daily commuters across major cities.
According to officials, free travel on services including the Metro Bus, Orange Line Train, Speedo buses, and electric bus routes will continue only until tonight. From June 13, passengers will be required to pay regular fares for all services.
The decision was confirmed by General Manager Operations of the Punjab Mass Transit Authority, Punjab Mass Transit Authority, Azir Shah, who said that the free travel facility introduced under a relief package in April 2026 was initially meant for a limited period of one month.
He added that although the government had considered extending the free travel scheme, the subsidy has now been withdrawn, and implementation of fare collection will begin immediately.
The free travel initiative was launched as part of a public relief package to support citizens amid rising inflation and transport costs. Authorities later reviewed the program and prepared recommendations for its continuation, but no extension was approved.
Officials said that passengers traveling on mass transit systems across Punjab will now resume paying standard fares as usual from tomorrow onwards.
The move comes at a time when fuel and transport costs remain a key concern for the public, despite limited changes in petroleum product prices.
Transport authorities have urged commuters to plan accordingly as normal fare operations resume across all major urban transit systems in Punjab.
