According to the Directorate of Public Instruction (DPI) Colleges, several government colleges have been struggling to manage rising fuel costs within their existing budgets.

Electric buses to cut college expenses

The department has decided to provide electric buses as part of the government’s environment-friendly transport policy. The initiative is expected to provide colleges with better transport facilities while reducing their recurring fuel expenditure.

Director Public Instruction Colleges Dr Syed Ansar Azhar said the electric buses could help colleges save millions of rupees every year.

The move comes after the government provided buses to 35 government colleges last year. The latest allocation will further expand the transport network available to students and staff at public-sector institutions.

Electric buses are increasingly being considered for public transport because they can reduce dependence on conventional fuels and lower operating costs over time. They can also contribute to efforts aimed at reducing emissions from vehicles.

The Higher Education Department is expected to implement the programme during the ongoing financial year, with 25 colleges included in the latest allocation.

The decision comes as educational institutions continue to face pressure from operational expenses, including transportation and fuel costs. The department expects the new buses to address some of these financial pressures while supporting cleaner transportation.
