The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) is taking steps to expand eSIM adoption in Pakistan, with a new policy introducing a Rs1,500 initial fee and allowing users to transfer an eSIM between phones at least 10 times free of charge.

The new policy is scheduled to take effect from August 17, 2026, and is aimed at making eSIM services more accessible to mobile phone users across the country.

However, eSIM compatibility remains limited, with the technology currently concentrated in flagship and selected mid-range smartphones. Official mobile usage figures indicate that Pakistan has more than 190 million active mobile connections, while smartphones account for around 55% to 60% of the market.

This means approximately 100 million to 110 million people use smartphones in the country. However, only an estimated 8% to 12% of smartphones currently in use are believed to support eSIM technology.

Compatible devices include Apple iPhone models beginning with the iPhone XS and later versions, Samsung’s selected Galaxy S and Note series devices, Google Pixel smartphones, and certain higher-end Xiaomi and Motorola models.

In contrast, a large portion of Pakistan’s smartphone market consists of budget and entry-level devices, many of which do not currently feature the hardware required for eSIM functionality.

Industry observers believe the PTA’s new policy and regulated fee structure could encourage wider adoption. As manufacturers increasingly introduce eSIM hardware in affordable smartphones, the technology could become more common in Pakistan over the coming years.

For consumers, checking whether their specific smartphone supports eSIM will remain essential before requesting activation under the new policy.
