(Web Desk): Pakistan Railways begins outsourcing critical operations to improve efficiency and modernize its services nationwide.

Pakistan Railways has started outsourcing several key services, officials informed a National Assembly committee, signaling a major step toward modernization and improved operational efficiency. The move follows a similar approach recently adopted by Pakistan International Airlines (PIA).

During the briefing, lawmakers were updated on multiple challenges facing the rail network, including land encroachments, aging locomotives, replacement schedules, and administrative inefficiencies that have affected service quality across the country. Officials explained that outsourcing certain services would help streamline management, reduce delays, and enhance overall performance.

The railway authorities emphasized that strategic outsourcing is part of a broader plan to revitalize Pakistan Railways. This includes upgrading infrastructure, adopting modern management practices, and ensuring timely and reliable services for passengers and freight operators alike.

By delegating operational responsibilities to specialized third-party providers, Pakistan Railways aims to address long-standing issues that have hindered productivity. Officials noted that modernization efforts will also focus on digital ticketing, automated scheduling, and maintenance improvements to ensure safer and faster rail services.

Lawmakers welcomed the initiative but stressed the importance of oversight and transparency to ensure that outsourcing does not compromise service quality or accountability.

The move comes at a time when Pakistan Railways is under pressure to enhance efficiency and compete with emerging transport alternatives, while also maintaining affordability for the public. Officials remain committed to continuous improvements and said that outsourcing, combined with modernization, is expected to transform the national rail network into a more reliable and passenger-friendly system.
