Electricity load shedding has increased across Punjab as Pakistan's overall power shortfall continues to rise, creating difficulties for consumers in Lahore and other cities.

Residents in Lahore reported that electricity is being suspended for around one hour after every hour in some areas, adding to the problems caused by hot and humid weather.

Lesco shortfall crosses 1,200MW

Sources said the Lahore Electric Supply Company (Lesco) is facing a shortfall of more than 1,200MW, while the country's overall electricity deficit has exceeded 4,000MW.

The growing gap between electricity demand and available supply has forced distribution companies to increase power cuts in several areas.

Solar power provides daytime relief

Sources said the shortfall remains relatively lower during the daytime because of solar electricity generation.

Pakistan is currently receiving around 7,000MW of electricity from solar systems daily, helping reduce pressure on the national grid during daylight hours.

However, the situation becomes more challenging when solar generation declines in the evening, as demand remains high while an alternative supply gap emerges.

Power generation falls at plants

According to NTDC sources, electricity production at several power plants has decreased, contributing to the widening supply gap.

The situation could become more difficult if the expected LNG ship does not arrive at the port, raising concerns about a further gas shortage.

Fuel conservation adds to pressure

Sources said some power plants are being operated below their full capacity to conserve gas and oil.

The reduced generation, fuel supply concerns and high electricity demand have combined to increase load shedding across Punjab, leaving consumers facing longer and more frequent power outages.
