Islamabad (Web Desk): The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) rejects claims of a Rs73 petrol and Rs84 diesel hike, calling the rumours on social media ‘completely baseless’.

The OGRA spokesperson Imran Ghaznavi warned that messages circulating online were false and misleading.

“The public should only rely on official announcements issued by the government or OGRA,” he said, urging people not to trust unverified forwards.

Rumours had suggested petrol prices could increase by Rs73.40 and diesel by Rs84. OGRA denied both, clarifying that no official communication about such hikes had been made.

Last week, the government increased petrol and diesel prices by Rs55 per litre or about 20% due to global oil price pressures. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif acknowledged the rise was difficult but necessary to manage the fuel crisis triggered by the Middle East tensions.

The increase has affected daily life, with higher transport fares and rising prices of fruits, vegetables, and other essentials. Shopkeepers reported transport costs jumping from Rs1,000 to Rs2,500–Rs3,000 per trip. Drivers have also raised pick-and-drop fares, passing the extra costs to the public.

At petrol pumps, customers faced disputes as attendants refused to dispense fuel in very small amounts, citing nozzle rate restrictions, which added to public frustration.
