Muhammad remains top baby boy name in England for third year
Muhammad has once again been named the most popular baby boy name in England and Wales, marking the third consecutive year it has topped the national rankings, according to the latest figures released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
Data for 2025 showed that nearly 6,000 newborn boys were given the name Muhammad, placing it well ahead of Noah, which remained in second place. The gap between the two names widened compared to previous years, highlighting Muhammad’s growing popularity among parents.
The ONS said Muhammad and Noah have occupied the top two positions since 2023. Meanwhile, Leo and Luca climbed to third and fourth places, overtaking traditionally popular names such as Oliver, George and Arthur.
The popularity of the name becomes even more notable when alternative spellings are considered. Mohammed ranked 20th and Mohammad placed 55th on the list. However, the ONS records each spelling separately rather than combining them into a single category.
Among girls, Olivia remained the most popular name, followed by Lily, Amelia, Isla and Florence.
Experts say the continued rise of Muhammad reflects Britain's growing cultural diversity and the increasing size of the Muslim community. The name has remained in the top 10 since 2016 and has featured among the top 100 boys' names since 1997.
Demographers note that many of the UK's most popular names now have international origins, reflecting changing social trends and multicultural influences across the country.
The latest rankings underline how baby naming patterns continue to evolve, while Muhammad remains firmly established as a favorite choice for thousands of families across England and Wales.
