A major development has emerged regarding the future of the Rs10 banknote in Pakistan, as the federal government considers possible changes to the country’s currency structure.
According to sources, the federal cabinet has formed a special committee under the leadership of the finance minister to examine whether the Rs10 banknote should continue to remain in circulation or be phased out. The committee has been tasked with reviewing the issue from both financial and practical perspectives.
Officials said the committee will closely analyze the production cost of the Rs10 banknote, which has reportedly increased over time. Based on this assessment, the panel will determine whether printing and maintaining the note is economically viable for the government.
In addition, the committee will evaluate whether a Rs10 coin is a more cost-effective and durable alternative compared to the banknote. Coins generally have a longer lifespan than paper notes, which could reduce recurring printing expenses in the long run.

The review has also raised public interest around the question of whether old currency notes will remain usable if new notes or coins are introduced. Authorities clarified that any final decision will be made after detailed recommendations are submitted.
Once the cabinet committee completes its review, it will present its findings to the federal cabinet. A final decision on the future of the Rs10 banknote will then be taken in light of these recommendations.
Economic analysts say the move reflects the government’s broader efforts to manage costs and modernize currency circulation, while ensuring convenience for the public.
