Govt shocks public as petroleum levy crosses IMF-agreed level
The government has increased the petroleum levy on petrol and diesel after the latest rise in fuel prices, further adding to the burden on consumers. According to official details, the petroleum levy has been increased by Rs13.91 per liter on petroleum products.
After the revision, the levy on petrol has been set at Rs117.41 per liter. For high-speed diesel, the petroleum levy has been fixed at Rs42.60 per liter. At the same time, the freight margin on high-speed diesel has been reduced by Rs9.38 per liter, bringing it down to Rs7.75 per liter.
Earlier, the government had already announced a sharp increase in fuel prices across the country. Under that notification, petrol prices were raised by Rs14.92 per liter, while diesel prices increased by Rs15 per liter.

After the latest changes, petrol is now priced at Rs414.78 per liter.
High-speed diesel is now available at Rs414.58 per liter.
The continuous adjustments in fuel prices and taxes have raised concerns among citizens already facing inflation and high living costs.
Experts say repeated increases in levy and fuel prices could further push transportation costs and overall inflation in the coming weeks. Analysts believe the situation may continue to affect household budgets as global oil markets remain unstable and domestic pricing adjustments continue.
