Government announces fuel subsidy for fishermen
The government of Sindh has announced a Rs 515 million fuel subsidy package for fishermen affected by rising diesel prices, offering relief to thousands of families whose livelihoods depend on the fishing sector.
Speaking to media in Sujawal, Sindh Fisheries Minister Muhammad Ali Malkani said the provincial government will provide one-time financial assistance to help cover fuel expenses for two months.
He said the increase in diesel prices has put serious pressure on the fishing industry. According to the minister, fish catches have fallen by around 20 percent in recent months, creating financial stress for fishermen and raising concerns over employment in coastal communities.
Malkani said 9,634 registered boat owners will receive assistance under the package. Owners of larger fishing boats will get Rs 200,000 per boat, while owners of smaller boats will receive Rs 100,000 each.
He added that the subsidy amount will be distributed through a digital system to ensure transparency and prevent delays in payments. The provincial government believes the digital mechanism will help make the process more efficient and accountable.
The minister also made online registration mandatory for fishermen seeking support under the scheme. He directed applicants to link their records with the Karachi Fisheries Harbour Authority.
Officials say the package is aimed at providing immediate relief as higher fuel costs continue to affect fishing activity. The move is expected to help stabilize operations in coastal areas and protect incomes tied to one of Sindh’s important economic sectors.
