Early summer holidays announced for educational institutes
Punjab is likely to announce early summer holidays in schools as intense heat and a heatwave warning raise concerns across the province. According to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), temperatures in most districts are expected to remain above normal from May 7 to May 11, increasing the risk of heat-related issues for students.
The advisory also highlights the possibility of a heatwave during this period, prompting authorities to consider adjusting the academic calendar. Normally, summer vacations begin on June 1, but officials are now reviewing an earlier closure due to rising temperatures and upcoming holiday gaps.
Sources suggest that Eid al-Adha holidays are expected from May 27 to May 29, followed by weekly holidays on May 30 and May 31. This could create a long break, making it possible for schools to close from May 27 instead of the usual schedule.
Meanwhile, Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat has proposed reducing both summer and winter vacations to increase total academic days from 180 to 190, aiming to compensate for learning loss caused by frequent closures.
On the other hand, private school associations have requested the government to allow morning summer camps from 7 am to 10 am during vacations. They argue that this would help reduce academic disruption and support students’ learning continuity.
The education department has stated that the final decision regarding the summer vacation schedule will be announced after reviewing weather conditions and the official moon sighting committee’s decision.
