Electric bike and scooter riders in Paris now face two new safety requirements, with fines imposed on those who fail to follow the rules.

The measures require riders to wear helmets and reflective clothing while using electric bicycles and scooters on public roads. Authorities say the rules are aimed at reducing serious accidents and improving road safety.

According to foreign media reports, police introduced the requirements after a rise in accidents involving electric bikes and scooters. Officials said a significant number of these crashes resulted in serious or even fatal head injuries.

Under the new rules, riders who fail to wear a helmet could face a fine of €135, equivalent to around $156. Those without a reflective jacket or other reflective clothing could be fined €35.

The requirements apply at all times when riders are using public roads, making safety equipment an important part of riding in the French capital.

Electric vehicles have become increasingly popular around the world as governments encourage cleaner transport and people look for alternatives to expensive petrol-powered vehicles.

Paris has also taken several measures to regulate electric mobility. Rental electric bicycles and scooters have faced restrictions in the city since 2023, although privately owned bicycles and scooters remain widely used.
