The federal government has increased the petroleum levy on high-speed diesel while reducing the levy on petrol in the latest fuel pricing adjustment, according to official sources.

Sources said the levy on high-speed diesel has been increased by Rs8.67 per litre, raising it from Rs44.59 to Rs53.26 per litre. The revision marks a significant upward adjustment in taxation on diesel, which is widely used in transport, agriculture, and heavy machinery.

In contrast, the government has provided relief to petrol consumers by reducing the petroleum levy by Rs9.24 per litre. The levy on petrol has been lowered from Rs116.08 to Rs106.24 per litre.

Officials confirmed that the revised petroleum levy structure has come into effect immediately from today.

The changes reflect a broader adjustment in fuel taxation policy, which often impacts transportation costs and inflation trends across the country. Diesel price increases are typically linked to higher freight charges, which can affect the cost of essential goods and services.

Petrol, commonly used in private vehicles and motorcycles, has received some relief, which may slightly ease the burden on daily commuters.

Energy analysts say such mixed adjustments are often made to balance revenue requirements with public pressure over rising fuel costs. However, they note that global oil market trends and exchange rate fluctuations continue to play a key role in determining domestic fuel pricing.
