(Web Desk): Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) may be shifted to provinces as the federal government reviews a new 8171 welfare plan.

The federal government has started considering handing the Benazir Income Support Programme to provincial governments. The move could change how financial assistance is managed across Pakistan.

Federal Minister for Sports Das Kohistani said the proposal is being discussed after the 18th Amendment. He said many powers have already been transferred to provinces, so welfare payments should also be managed at that level.

The minister said the proposal has also come from several provinces. He added that detailed consultations are continuing and no final decision has been taken yet.

Das Kohistani made it clear that the government will first consult coalition partners and political parties. He said any final decision will only come after broader consultation to avoid political tension.

He also said the federal government does not plan to completely end the Benazir Income Support Programme. According to him, there is no proposal under consideration to abolish the welfare programme.

The minister explained that discussions are focused on administrative matters. The idea is to give provinces greater authority so they can manage the programme according to local needs.

Officials believe provinces may be able to respond more effectively to development challenges and public concerns. They say stronger provincial involvement could help support reach deserving people more efficiently.

The government also believes this step may increase provincial economic autonomy. Officials said a stronger provincial role in distributing assistance could also improve transparency.

Further details and practical steps are expected from the government soon. For now, the programme will continue under the existing system until consultations are completed.

The discussion shows the government is thinking about changing the management of welfare support. The programme itself is not being ended, but its structure could become more provincial.

If the proposal is implemented carefully, it may improve delivery and public trust. Much will depend on political agreement, planning and execution.
